Some Call It Magic
Theatre of Illusion
Samm Frazee
Issue date: 10/11/06 Section: The Pulse
Some call it illusion, while others may call it magic, it was a night filled with unexpected surprises at the Spencer's theatre of illusion. Which concluded Frostburg's Family Fall Magic weekend, put on by Frostburg's own UPC.
The Spencer's have been performers for over twenty years and have preformed all of the United States and Europe as well as China. The Cordt's arena was filled with Frostburg students and there parents as well as families from town. The Magician Kevin Spencer explained to the audience the difference between reality and illusion using the front section of the Cumberland Times as his example.
The night was filled with old time simple humor in which the audience chuckled. Throughout the night he incorporated the audience several times into his illusions, people were amazed and left question how did he do that?
Kevin Spencer made references to past great magicians of the 20th century and gave an introduction to each trick before he preformed it, which seemed to draw the audience deeper into the excitement of the show.
The finale of the show brought excitement to the entire audience. He preformed an escape trick which was once preformed by the great Houdini, he locked himself in a steel jar filled with 50 gallons of water and had to escape within 3 minutes, and he was successful.
When asked what they thought of the evening, a parent of a Frostburg student said "it was an evening filled with fun and entertainment enjoyed by all." The night left you with the enjoyable feeling and the desire to learn how to perform magic.
