The Outline

Safe For All Ages

Issue date: 10/4/06 Section: Music
The Outline is currently on the road with Saosin on the west coast. Both bands are working to promote their summer releases. The Outline released their second full length, You Smash It, We'll Build Around It on Fearless this past July. The response has been pretty good according to Graham Fink, singer/ guitarist. "A lot of people like it, and they like it for more than just one song. We don't just have one hit, but they like a lot of the different stuff on the album". Although it was their second full length, it was the first release that a label or producer helped with. They released their first album, The Chestnut Tree, on their own. Graham enjoyed producing that album on their own. "It was nice to have control over it. We re doing it on our own and no one had control over us" he said. However, the band is happy with Fearless records, "They are doing great for us. They're just trying to keep us rolling and keep us on tour" said Graham. The Outline has been trying to promote themselves for the four years they've been together by touring as much as they can. The band consists of Graham Fink (guitar/ vocals), Ryan Rabin (drums/ vocals), Austen Lee (guitar/ keyboards), Max St. John (bass/ vocals). They feel touring is the best way to get fans supporting the band. "We'd much rather win over an audience by playing shows for them rather than Myspace promotion. We'd rather find fans that really enjoy it rather than the fans that are told they should enjoy it," said Graham. This year they played a few dates on the Warped Tour in California. On their first date, they were the last band to play for the day, and they got shut down after three songs. "It was kind of a bummer because there were people who had waited all day to see us", said Graham. The devoted fans were let down. The audience response has been different depending on who's headlining the tour. Currently with Saosin, "they have been responding the best to our harder stuff" said Graham. When the band toured with Panic! At The Disco, "The parents of the 15 year old kids had the best response, which we really appreciate. These people grew up with The Rolling Stones and Van Morrisson", Graham took it as a compliment. The Outline does not shoot for a specific demographic. "Hopefully we don't have a demographic", said Graham, "we like to reach a broad audience. It's not just for kids either, it's for all ages".
