The fall college season has gotten started and now people can get a good feel of the local teams. Many have gotten off to fast starts with some leaving the competition far behind.

At Frostburg State the women's tennis team is out to its best start in years. After winning two matches out of the last two seasons this year's team was already at 6-7, including a huge conference win over Penn State-Altoona, heading into last Saturday's match at Bethany. Heather Potosnak, Caroline Shedd and Jenn Tolbert have led the way this season with a combined record of 19-9 in singles play. The team is showing signs of life for the first time in years and has a shot at the AMCC crown in a couple weeks.

West Virginia men's soccer is out to a 7-1-2 start so far this fall. The team has climbed the polls to be ranked number nine in the nation and took number two Virginia to overtime before falling. The team has padded it's stats with some weak competition in the Big East but looks to continue their run into to the post season.

The West Virginia football team has been the toast of the area this fall with the number four ranking in the polls as they continue to steam roll opponents behind the legs of running back Steve Slaton. Slaton and quarterback Pat White have been slicing through opponents and show no signs of slowing down. The Mountaineers biggest test still looms later in the season when the team has to travel to Louisville.
University of Maryland's football team is off to a 3-1 start. The lone loss came on a Thursday night game in Morgantown to the hands of Steve Slaton and West Virginia. The defense has looked shaky for the Terps but the young receiving corps will look to help out quarterback Sam Hollenbach. Already half way to bowl eligibility, Maryland is looking forward to a strong season the rest of the way. The Terps begin ACC play Saturday at 3:30 when they travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech.

The Maryland field hockey team has shown no signs of slowing down since winning the national championship last fall. The team is ranked number one in the country and defeated then number two Wake Forest a couple weeks ago. The team has been crushing opponents this fall and has an unblemished 10-0 record. The teams next big test comes October 7 when they face off with Duke.
