The Men in the Mirror

Islamofascists and Neo-Cons

Paul Grealish

Issue date: 9/20/06 Section: Opinion
Think of someone you hate. Now think of the exact reason or reasons as to why you hate them. There's a fairly solid chance that the things you hate in others are the things you most fear and hate in yourself. For my part, I don't hate anyone (hard to believe but life's too short not to love everybody). Although I do have a dislike of Fundamentalist Christians that's not far off hate. Why do I dislike them? Primarily, it is their arrogance. And guess what Paul's not-so-secret downfall has always been? You guessed it.

This leads on to my primary concern here. The neo-Conservative movement in US politics has been the single most powerful driving force in the Western world for five years now. Islamic Fundamentalism (or Islamo-Facism, not to be confused with true Islam) is the most powerful ideology in the 'Eastern World', if it can be called that. They both look upon one another with bitter hatred. And yet, once you take away the façade of Christianity versus Islam, the major differences between the two belief systems don't add up to a hill of beans.

Neo-Cons tell us that the Islamist extremists are terrorists. That is true. Terrorism is the use of force to achieve political aims by groups who do not have political legitimacy. These people are terrorists. Of course the fact that the Neo-Cons have made the use of force to impose their will on the world is largely ignored. Anyone who denies the link between Neo-Cons and violence should take a peek at the works of the "Project for the New American Century" and see what I mean. The democratically elected government of the USA has the right to sanction the use of force. Whether or not they are legitimately fighting a war in Iraq is another matter…

Islamic fundamentalists want to covert the world to Islam (their version of it anyway) and force us all to live under harsh Islamic Sharia law. This is broadly true and is one of the stated aims of Al-Qaeda. Since when has the idea of foisting your religious views on others ever been a problem for Neo-Cons. Despite Christ's teachings to the contrary, the religious right which forms the Neo-Cons power base, demand prayer in public schools and a copy of the Ten Commandments on every public building, and that's just for starters.
