The Walk for Water was held on Saturday, May 13, 2006 at Morven Park Equestrian Center in Leesburg, Virginia. This is the third year that the walk has taken place.

The first year, as a whole, the walk raised $53,000.
"Last year we raised about $82,000," said Teri Pierorazio.

The Walk for Water is a walk that raises money for wells and education for the Dagara Tribe in Western Africa. Those who participated took a school van down Friday night, camped out, and the walk was in the morning. The walk was from 8:30am to 1:00pm.

Kristen Karinshak, a 15 year old from Loudoun County High School in Leesburg, established the walk. Micaela, Kristen's sister, is a student here at Frostburg.

"Micaela & I brought it here last year and are trying to raise money on campus. We are trying to put together a walk at Frostburg next year, but it's a work in progress," said Pierorazio.

Walking for Water is affiliated with Wisdom Springs Inc, which is a nonprofit organization. Every cent made goes completely to the Dagara tribe in Burkina Faso, West Africa (a land locked country) to build wells and give them a better education. One well is about $9000 and that can save a minimum of about 150 people. Only $10 can send a child to school for one year.

The Dagara women walk for hours every day to bring water to their tribe; carrying about 25 gallons on their heads (Americans use about 25 gallons of water in baths). The children start at about age 3 walking for their water.

"We're hoping to raise $250," said Megan Burke.

Along with collecting money, the Walk for Water also collects clothing donations as well.

"We are comparing our walk to Relay for Life in the way that it is symbolic that we are walking our 5 or 10K walk because of the fact that the women walk every day for water that we take for granted. At the moment, we are not an organized group on campus, but we are teaming up with the African Student Association (ASA) and we have quite a few members of that group joining us at the walk. Most of the people coming are from the DC & VA area, but hopefully if we can have the walk here next year, we'll have more Frostburg participants," said Pierorazio.
