Last year I congratulated a few players in a column on a year well done at Frostburg
State. Continuing that tradition this year, there are many players at Frostburg worthy of acknowledgement. A few stand-outs really helped Frost- burg out this year and one even has a chance to put Frostburg State University on the map as a pro athlete. Congratulations to all teams this year and hopefully we have another good school year of athletics right around the corner.
Best Fall Athlete: Kevin Culbert, Football. Kevin had an outstanding season for Frostburg State football this year. The senior racked up two interceptions, 100 tackles and seventeen sacks. Those are some amazing numbers for a ten game season. Culbert was also named to two senior all-star games, the D3.football.com All-South team, the ECAC All-South-westregion first team and second team All-American. While helping the team to a post-season appearance Culbert was also signed to a contract by the Cleveland Browns.
Best Winter Athlete: Marcus McIntyre, Men's Basketball. McIntyre had a great season shooting the ball for the Bobcats and helping them advance to the semifinals of the AMCC tournament this year. McIntyre shot 53% from the field to go along with his 79% free throw shooting. Marcus also averaged 11 points and seven rebounds per game. He was also named to the AMCC All- Conference team.
Best Spring Athlete: Billey Hollister, Baseball. Hollister is having an absolutely stunning year pitching for the baseball team. As of Sunday, Hollister had a 1.97 E.R.A. and an 8-1 record. He has also thrown four complete games and opponents are batting a mere .180 against him. Hollister was also named the Pre-season AMCC Player of the Year and is living up to that billing.
Newcomer of the Year: Lindsay Hoffman, Women's Soccer. Lindsay came to Frostburg this year as a transfer from East Tennessee State. The junior had a magnificent season helping lead the women's soccer team to the post season. Hoffman had five goals and six assists.
Coach of the Year: Brian Parker, Women's Soccer. Parker has had an amazing run in his tenure at Frostburg State. The women's soccer team has won the AMCC Championship and been to the NCAA tournament four years in a row.In his time, Parker has amassed a 51-22-10 overall record while going an astounding 26-3-1 in the AMCC. This past season the team went 8-0-1 in AMCC play. Parker has also won two AMCC Coach of the Year awards.
Athlete of the Year: Kevin Culbert, Football. In all four of his years Kevin was a phenomenal athlete playing at the defensive end position. He has wreaked havoc on opposing offenses and will now attempt to continue to do so at the next level. Congratulations to Kevin on a great career at Frostburg State and a hopefully even better one in the NFL.
