The Bottom Line

The Imaginary Scapegoat

Aaron Doyle

Issue date: 5/3/06 Section: The Foxx Boxx
Our country is being ruled by absolute geniuses, men and women of such vast intelligence that they make their enemies seem as if they have Downs Syndrome.

Under the guidance of the fair-minded individuals in the Religious Right, Christianity has become simultaneously the most prominent and, at least in their view, the most persecuted religion in America.

In a country where the word 'God' is printed on our money, is imbedded in our Pledge of Allegiance, and where we swear to the truth on Holy Bibles in court, it seems that the attitude of devout Christians is growing more and more to resemble that of the victimized.

Anyone who doesn't believe that the Ten Commandments should be memorialized in stone in front of courthouses these days is a godless, abortion-loving, terrorist-loving liberal - as if liberal has become a dirty word - and that their opposition amounts to nothing short of pure hate for the Church and those who would dare to follow its' lessons.

In her new book, "Godless: The Church Of Liberalism," Ann Coulter tells us that, amongst other things, "Liberals love to boast that they are not 'religious'," and that liberalism itself is indeed a religion filled with its own saints, churches, and priests. First off, I don't know when 'liberal' become synonymous with 'non-religious,' as Jesus himself was only some unwashed dreadlocks shy of being a hippie himself. (all that "turn the other cheek?" and "the meek shall inherit the Earth" nonsense? Oh come on.) I know many liberals who are also proud members of their churches, synagogues, and mosques.

Hell, just look at some of the saints Coulter tells us are mascots for the secular left: former Presidents like Jimmy Carter, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Woodrow Wilson. All unabashed liberals, godless heathens who hated America. George Clooney, who is some unabashedly Bush-hating that he directed a movie about McCarthyism. Listen, these things don't have to make sense to normal people, just to the ever-more mindless Christians in this country.
