Issue date: 5/3/06 Section: News
This past Friday, April 28th, the community of Frostburg State University came together as one to support The American Cancer Society in the fight against cancer. This is the fifth year FSU has sponsored a Relay for Life.

"This year we had a larger turnout and raised more money than ever before." said Joseph Ruiz, vice president of the Student Center for Volunteerism and co-chair of the Relay for Life organizational committee.

This year's turnout included over thirty three teams made up of students, faculty, and members of the local community. At the time of the interview there had been over sixteen thousand dollars raised for the American Cancer Society. This is over a thousand more dollars than organizers predicted would be raised, and four thousand more than last year's total.

The Relay for Life works like this: a team raises enough money for at least registration fees ($10 per team member) and after the team is registered they literally set up camp at the relay site. The event starts off at 6 pm and ends at 6 am. During this time your must have at least one member from a team walking or jogging around the path or track at any given time.

At six pm, when the Relay begins, many survivors of cancer are invited to say a few words about what they've gone though and what the Relay means to them. After that the first lap around the path is taken by the survivors who are all given purple sashes to wear.

Throughout the night there are different activities for all the participants to enjoy such as karaoke, assorted games, and a late night movie projected on a massive screen in the camping area. When the sun goes down there is a special Luminary ceremony that takes place to honor loved ones who were taken by cancer and also those that survived.

It's quite a sight to see over one hundred and fifty of these special candles get lit one by one as everyone gathers around for a few moments of quiet reflection during the ceremony. At 6 am there's an awards ceremony to for the participants. Awards are given out for best camp site design and biggest fundraisers.
